Abstract

Dr. Luis Ernesto Hernández Gamboa devoted his life to medicine, education, and research, establishing himself as a distinguished figure in the academic and scientific spheres. His training began at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he earned the degree of Physician and Surgeon, later complemented by a Master’s in Education and Teaching from the Universidad Tecnológica Latinoamericana en Línea (UTEL), along with numerous diplomas and continuing education courses in health, bioethics, and medical education.

Throughout his notable professional career, he held highly significant positions in national and state institutions. He served as Head of the Department of Research, Planning, and Development in the Medical Services of UNAM, as well as Deputy Director of Planning and subsequently Director of Research at the National Medical Arbitration Commission (CONAMED), where he promoted initiatives that strengthened patient safety and the quality of health services. At the Ministry of Health, he served as Head of the Department of Patient Safety within the Undersecretariat for Innovation and Quality.

In Chiapas, his work had an equally important impact. He served as State Coordinator of Health Caravans, Coordinator of the Patria Nueva Health Center, and Internal Lead of the Research Area of the State Ministry of Health. In parallel, beginning in 2013, he chaired the Editorial Committee of Salud en Chiapas, consolidating it as a regional platform for scientific dissemination.

His academic vocation led him to join the Faculty of Human Medicine, Campus II, of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH), as a professor in the Medical Surgeon program, teaching core areas in the training of future health professionals, including Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Propaedeutics, Bioethics, History and Philosophy of Medicine, and Research Methodology. He also supervised numerous theses and actively promoted comprehensive training grounded in ethical and humanistic principles.

As a researcher and scientific communicator, he was a member of the Editorial Board of Diabetes Hoy para el Médico, published by the Mexican Diabetes Federation, A.C., and authored more than twenty articles in national and international journals, including Cirugía y Cirujanos of the Mexican Academy of Surgery, Ginecología y Obstetricia de México, Revista Médica del IMSS, Revista CONAMED, Revista Mexicana de Cardiología, Salud Pública de México, and Salud en Chiapas. His academic output reflected a broad and sustained interest in bioethics, medical education, and public health.

His role as an editor distinguished him in a special way. He was the founder of the Anales de Medicina Universitaria journal, a project he promoted with vision and commitment to amplify the scientific contributions of students and faculty of the Faculty of Human Medicine at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas. From its inception, he assumed the responsibility of Editor-in-Chief, a position he held until the previous issue. In this role, he strengthened editorial quality processes, expanded the academic visibility of the journal, and laid the groundwork for its continued growth and projection.

The Faculty of Human Medicine, Campus II, of the Benemérita UNACH, together with the academic community of Anales de Medicina Universitaria, recognize in Dr. Hernández Gamboa an exemplary human being—physician, educator, researcher, and editor—who leaves an invaluable legacy for medical education and scientific dissemination in Chiapas and throughout Mexico.

A few months after his passing, which occurred in May 2025, we express with profound respect and gratitude our recognition of his trajectory, and we sincerely mourn his loss.

May he rest in peace.
