Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of periodontal conditions and treatment needs in patients seeking dental care at the Faculty of Odontological Sciences and Public Health of the Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas (UNICACH).
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 121 patients. Sociodemographic data were collected through structured interviews. Periodontal status and treatment needs were determined using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN), which was applied by two previously trained and standardized examiners. For statistical analysis, the mean and standard deviation were calculated for quantitative variables, and frequencies and proportions were calculated for categorical variables.
Results: Analysis of the periodontal status revealed that only 1.6% of the sample presented a healthy periodontium (Code 0). The most frequent finding was Code 1 at 36.4%, followed by Code 3 at 23.1% and Code 2 at 21.5%. Only 17.4% presented Code 4. On average, 1.1% of sextants were observed to be healthy and 0.16% were edentulous. Regarding treatment needs, 98.4% of individuals required oral hygiene instruction (TN1). More specifically, 62% needed scaling and prophylaxis in addition to oral hygiene instruction (TN2), while 17.4% required complex periodontal treatment (TN3).
Conclusions: The studied population exhibited a high prevalence of periodontal treatment needs. These findings underscore the urgency of implementing strategic care and prevention plans to mitigate the onset and progression of periodontal diseasel.
